Prompt engineer jobs in 2026: does the role still exist?

The prompt engineer title has all but vanished from job ads. The skill hasn't. Where prompting still shows up, what it pays, and what to apply for.

Prompt engineer jobs have almost disappeared as a job title. As of 27 October 2026, none of the 2,416 active jobs on Tokn is titled "prompt engineer", and neither is any of the 9,985 postings on the 76 company career boards we read. The skill did not go away: it moved into AI engineer, forward deployed and legal engineer roles, and those pay like engineering jobs.

Scope matters here: Tokn tracks AI companies' career pages in Europe and North America, not gig platforms or every employer, so these counts are for the boards Tokn tracks. For the wider picture, see the main paths into AI careers.

In short

  • Zero "prompt engineer" titles on Tokn as of 27 October 2026, in Europe or North America.
  • Prompting is still a skill: about 6% of the job ads we scanned ask for it, and about 3 in 10 AI engineering ads.
  • No pay premium: North American ads that ask for prompting have a median posted midpoint of $270k, about the same as AI engineer titles.
  • Want this work? Aim for AI engineer, forward deployed or domain roles like legal engineer, not the old title.

From a $335k headline to a footnote

The prompt engineer job peaked as a story in 2023 and faded as a title by 2025.

In early 2023, Anthropic advertised a "Prompt Engineer & Librarian" role to discover and document prompting best practices, as Fortune reported in March 2023. The band was reportedly $175k to $335k, so the famous $335k was the top of the range. That posting is gone.

In April 2025 the Wall Street Journal called it "already obsolete". According to TechRepublic's coverage, the WSJ reported Microsoft data from a 31,000-worker survey ranking prompt engineer second to last among new roles companies were considering. Microsoft's public Work Trend Index 2025 lists AI trainer (32%) and AI data specialist (32%) at the top and doesn't mention prompt engineer.

Indeed economist Allison Shrivastava told Fortune in May 2025 that prompt engineering is "still definitely a good thing to have, but it's not an entire title". An academic study of 20,662 LinkedIn postings (2025) found only 72 prompt engineer positions, under 0.5%.

How many prompt engineer jobs are there today?

On the boards Tokn tracks, none. As of 27 October 2026, no active Tokn job has "prompt engineer" in its title, while AI engineer and forward deployed titles number in the dozens.

Where the work went

Prompting became one skill among several in roles that build or deploy AI products.

AI engineers and applied AI

Most of the work landed here. Counting the wider AI engineering family (AI, applied AI, LLM and GenAI engineer titles: 98 ads in Europe, 93 in North America), 23 and 34 mention prompting or context engineering. The wording shows how it sits next to other skills. Anthropic's Applied AI Engineer ad asked for "prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks". OpenAI wanted "advanced prompt and context engineering, evaluation frameworks, safety, and security". See what an LLM engineer does day to day.

Forward deployed and solutions engineers

Forward deployed engineers build AI systems with customers, and prompting is part of that. Flagged ads: 22 of 99 in Europe (inflated by Celonis, which repeats the same programme text across many ads) and 20 of 125 in North America.

Context engineering

Context engineering is the 2025 rename of the skill, and it is broader than writing a prompt. Shopify's CEO Tobi Lütke backed the term in June 2025 and Andrej Karpathy agreed days later. Anthropic's September 2025 guide calls it iterative, "in contrast to the discrete task of writing a prompt". On Tokn, 60 posting texts mention context engineering (31 in Europe, 29 in North America), but only one title uses it: n8n's Internal Context Engineer.

Model behaviour and evals

Shaping and measuring model behaviour is the most direct heir of the 2023 job. Perplexity's role, posted at $200k to $330k plus equity, is the example. Evaluation titles are more common: 31 across both regions, 10 on LangChain's evals platform team.

The realistic path for people without a coding background is a domain plus prompting. Harvey's Legal Engineers are lawyers who "use natural language prompting to design bespoke resources, including agents, playbooks, and other tools". Among legal and finance "engineer" ads at Harvey and Legora in North America, 17 of 18 mention prompting. More options are in AI jobs without a technical background.

AI trainer and annotation gigs

Many "prompt engineer" listings on big job boards point to hourly AI-training and annotation work: contracts, often part-time and irregular. Cohere, for example, advertised part-time freelance annotation roles in Canada at CA$30 to CA$40 an hour. Tokn excludes most gig work by design.

Which job ads still ask for prompting?

About 6 to 9% of the AI job ads we scanned, depending on how you count. Method: we fetched the full text of the 2,361 active Tokn jobs still listed on Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever boards on 27 October 2026, and flagged those that mention prompt engineering, prompting, system prompts or context engineering.

EuropeNorth America
Ads scanned7931,568
Flagged (raw)71 (9.0%)113 (7.2%)
Flagged, excluding Celonis and Harvey47 of 754 (6.2%)88 of 1,448 (6.1%)

Celonis and Harvey repeat the same text across many ads, so we show both counts. The skill clusters in jobs that apply models, not jobs that build them. In the LLM and generative AI category, 17% of European and 20% of North American ads are flagged. Research scientist and research engineer ads almost never mention it: 2 of 176 across both regions.

Prompt engineer salary: what these jobs pay

There is no pay premium for prompting. In North America, the median posted band midpoint for ads that ask for it is $270,000 (n = 102), against $262,250 for AI engineer titles (n = 36), on Tokn as of 27 October 2026.

Group (North America, USD)Ads with a salaryMedian midpointMiddle half
Ads asking for prompting or context engineering102$270,000$218,750 to $300,000
AI engineer titles36$262,250$238,250 to $300,000

These are posted bands, usually base pay without equity. The groups pay the same because they are, in practice, the same jobs. In Europe, only 11 of the 71 flagged ads published a euro salary, too few for a reliable median. One more North American example: Harvey's Legal Engineer was posted at $220k to $320k plus equity and commission. For engineering pay by region, see AI engineer salaries.

Ranking pages often quote a much lower figure: Coursera's guide (updated October 2026) cites ZipRecruiter's US "average" of about $63,000. That number mixes in annotation and writing gigs sold under the label, which is why it sits so far below engineering pay.

Remote prompt engineer jobs

Few, and mostly under other titles. Among the flagged ads on Tokn, 22 are fully remote as of 27 October 2026: 10 in Europe (at Cohere, Cursor, ElevenLabs, GitLab, Pigment and Supabase) and 12 in North America (at Airbnb, Anthropic, Contentsquare, Datadog, GitLab, Glean, Snowflake and Spotify).

On aggregators, most "remote prompt engineer" results are annotation and AI-training gigs. Read the contract terms before you apply.

If you want this work, what to do

Aim for the roles that absorbed the skill, not the title.

  • If you code: become an AI engineer. Our roadmap on how to become an AI engineer is the main route. Prompting matters, but so do retrieval, tool use and evals.
  • Show, don't claim: build a small agent with an evaluation set and a public write-up. Here is how to build a portfolio that shows it.
  • If you don't code: pair a domain you know (law, finance, games, support) with strong prompting. Legal engineer roles and Ubisoft's Prompt Specialist show this works, but these roles are rare.

FAQ

Do prompt engineer jobs still exist?

Barely, as a title. As of 27 October 2026, none of the 2,416 jobs on Tokn was titled "prompt engineer". The work moved into AI engineer, forward deployed, model behaviour and legal engineer roles.

How much does a prompt engineer make?

In North America, ads asking for prompting have a median posted midpoint of about $270k (n = 102), close to AI engineer titles. Hourly annotation work pays far less.

Was the $335k Anthropic prompt engineer job real?

Yes. In 2023 Anthropic advertised a role with a reported band of $175k to $335k. The posting is gone; Anthropic now hires applied AI engineers who list prompting as one skill among several.

Can I get a remote prompt engineer job?

Remote listings under that name are mostly annotation gigs. Among jobs that ask for prompting, Tokn had 22 fully remote ones as of 27 October 2026 (10 Europe, 12 North America).

What is context engineering, and is it a job title?

It is the broader successor to prompt engineering: managing all the information a model sees, not just the instruction. It appears in 60 ads on Tokn but in one title only.

Is prompt engineering worth learning?

Yes, as a skill. About 3 in 10 AI engineering ads (57 of 191) and 1 in 5 forward deployed ads (42 of 224) on Tokn mention it. As a career on its own, it no longer has a market.
