A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer's organisation to get a product, today usually an AI model, running in production, then feeds what they learn back to the product team. It is engineering, not sales: the European ads we read ask for production code and almost never mention demos.

As of 14 October 2026, Tokn counts 41 FDE ads in Europe at 14 companies, led by Mistral AI (10), OpenAI (6) and Databricks (6); 31 without Mistral. With neighbouring customer-facing roles such as solutions engineers and deployment strategists, the family reaches 156 of our 802 AI jobs, about 1 in 5 (124 without Mistral). For the wider map, see the main career paths in AI.

In short

  • An FDE builds production software inside a customer's systems. The title comes from Palantir.
  • Solutions engineers do demos and pre-sales; FDEs ship code after the sale.
  • Where a minimum is stated, ads typically ask for 5 years (Mistral AI 2+). Stated travel is 20–50%.
  • Most ads are in London and Paris. The 9 remote ones are remote within one country or region.
  • Pay is rarely published. The one FDE band we found: Anthropic London, £225k–£255k base.

What is a forward deployed engineer?

An FDE is an engineer assigned to a customer rather than to a product feature, who stays until the solution works in production.

Palantir, which popularised the role, gives the clearest definition in its post on engineering roles: "You can think of a Dev's focus as 'one capability, many customers,' while a Delta's focus is 'one customer, many capabilities.'" "Delta" is its nickname for FDEs, "a throwback to our early days, when each team in Business Development was named after a letter in the NATO alphabet."

Why AI companies hire so many now

Models are general; enterprise value is specific. As a16z put it in 2025: "Enterprises buying AI are like your grandma getting an iPhone: they want to use it, but they need you to set it up."

Big players are building whole units around the role. In May 2026, OpenAI announced the OpenAI Deployment Company, a standalone unit to "embed engineers specialized in frontier AI deployment, known as Forward Deployed Engineers", with more than $4 billion of initial investment and the planned purchase of Tomoro, bringing about 150 FDEs and deployment specialists. CNBC reported that AWS committed $1bn to a forward deployed engineering unit and Microsoft $2.5bn to an AI implementation unit.

Growth data exists only for the US: Lightcast figures quoted by Fortune show US FDE postings up more than 1,000% in January–August 2026 compared with a year earlier.

What a forward deployed engineer does day to day

An FDE runs a deployment from first call to handover:

  1. Discovery. Find the problem worth solving and the metric that proves it is solved.
  2. Build. Write integrations, agents and evals inside the customer's systems. Anthropic's ads mention "MCP servers, sub-agents, and agent skills that will be used in production workflows."
  3. Ship and harden. "Get a first version live in days, then harden it over weeks," as Cursor's ad put it, measuring revenue, cost or hours saved, "not seat adoption".
  4. Hand over. "Leave the customer team able to run what you built."
  5. Feed back. Tell product and research where the model or product falls short.

The tech stack in European FDE ads

Python and agents each appear in 28 of 41 ads. Outside Mistral, TypeScript appears in 19 of 31 and evals in 20 of 31. Fine-tuning is mostly Mistral's: 8 of its 10 ads, 3 of the other 31. More on the tools AI job ads ask for.

Forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer and other look-alikes

The difference is the moment of the sale. Solutions engineers help win the deal with demos and proofs of concept; FDEs build the real system once it is signed.

Solutions engineer ads mention demos in 27 of 40 and pre-sales in 31 of 40. FDE ads mention demos in 3 of 41, and pre-sales in only 3 of the 31 outside Mistral. Instead, 16 of 41 FDE ads say you will write or ship production code. Cursor's ad: "This is not a demo role."

The lines blur: Mistral's FDEs join pre-sales calls, and LangChain's "Deployed Engineer" ad asked candidates to "own the technical win in pre-sales". For the product-side cousin, see what an LLM engineer does.

Is it just consulting? Palantir says "consultants generally create a one-time analysis… while at Palantir we work together with our customers to build a long-term solution." Sceptics see some of these jobs as solutions or integration engineering under a newer, more fashionable title. We think the code is the test: if an ad never mentions shipping software, it is a solutions role with a new name.

What forward deployed engineer jobs ask for

A seasoned engineer at ease with customers and travel.

  • Experience. Where a minimum is stated (22 ads), the median is 5 years, with or without Mistral. Mistral is the low end (2+); Anthropic Paris and Munich and Lovable London asked for 8+.
  • Background. Consulting comes up in 12 ads; Anthropic also invited "former technical founders".
  • Travel. 15 of 41 ads state a share, all between 20% and 50%. OpenAI: "Travel up to 50% is required." Databricks is the light end, with a customer visit "once every 4-8 weeks".
  • Languages. 6 of 41 (none at Mistral): native French at Anthropic Paris, native German at Anthropic Munich, Spanish at two OpenAI roles, Arabic at Scale AI, French at H Company.
  • Clearance. 3 of 41 (2 of 31 without Mistral): Cohere's two UK public sector roles prefer active DV clearance; Mistral's defence role asked for a clearable French citizen.
  • Remote. All 9 remote ads are remote within one country or region, never "anywhere". ElevenLabs offered anywhere in the UK but warned: "Expect regular travel for customer onsites." More on remote AI jobs in Europe.

Who hires forward deployed engineers in Europe?

AI labs and platforms, mostly in London (11 ads) and Paris (9), plus 9 remote. Without Mistral, London has 9 and Paris 3.

Nine ads use "founding FDE" or similar wording: these European teams are being built now. For Mistral, read what it's like to work at Mistral AI; for the bigger picture, the AI companies hiring most in Europe.

Tokn does not track Palantir. On 14 October, its own job board listed 22 FDE and deployment strategist ads in Europe, 14 in London and 7 for new grads or interns.

How much does a forward deployed engineer earn in Europe?

Little is published: Tokn read no salary on any of the 41 FDE ads. The one published band we found is Anthropic's FDE role in London, £225,000–£255,000 base: one data point at a top-paying lab, not a market rate.

Anthropic's applied AI engineer role in Paris advertised €220,000–€235,000. Outside the labs, pay can be far lower: Palantir published €2,800–€6,000 a month for an FDE in Vilnius. See what AI roles pay in Europe.

How to become a forward deployed engineer

Usually a few years of software engineering with customer contact, plus something shipped with LLMs.

  • From software engineering. Build agents, evals or MCP servers and get them used. Founding-engineer and consulting experience both count.
  • From solutions engineering or consulting. Strengthen the coding side. Deployment strategist roles can bridge: Mistral's asked for "2+ years in a client-facing strategic and technical role", ElevenLabs' for "basic proficiency in Python".
  • As a student or graduate. Mistral advertised a 6-month FD ML Engineer internship in Paris. ElevenLabs' UK ad accepted customer experience from "student clubs or side projects". Palantir hires new-grad and intern FDEs in London.

Is forward deployed engineering a good career move?

We think yes, if you like customers and can live with travel: you work close to frontier models, on many business problems, with visible impact.

The downsides: heavy travel, context switching and pressure to deliver fast. The role may also shrink as products mature. OpenAI's head of forward deployed engineering, Colin Jarvis, told The Next Web that custom work per project had fallen from about 90% to about 50%, adding: "From OpenAI's side, we should always be temporary."

Where it leads: FDE lead and manager roles (5 on Tokn), product (Scale AI and Snowflake advertise forward deployed product manager roles), core engineering, or founding. ElevenLabs co-founder Mati Staniszewski was a Palantir deployment strategist.

FAQ

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

An FDE builds production software inside a customer's systems: scoping the problem, writing integrations and agents, rolling them out and handing them over. They then report what they learned to the product team. Palantir sums it up as "one customer, many capabilities".

What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?

A solutions engineer works before the sale: demos, proofs of concept, helping account executives win. An FDE works after it, building the real system. Solutions engineer ads mention demos in 27 of 40 cases; FDE ads in 3 of 41.

Can you be a forward deployed engineer remotely?

Partly. All 9 remote FDE ads on Tokn are remote within one country or region and expect regular travel to customers. Remote means no fixed office, not working from anywhere.

How many years of experience do you need?

Where a minimum is stated, the median is 5 years. Mistral AI asked for 2+ and advertised an internship; Anthropic's Paris and Munich roles asked for 8+. Palantir hires new grads into FDE roles in London.
