Remote AI jobs in Europe exist, but they are a minority. On Tokn, as of 12 October 2026, about 130 of roughly 770 AI jobs are fully remote: about one in six. Half of them sit at four companies, the big AI labs barely hire remotely, and "remote" almost always means remote from a named list of countries.

We count jobs from company career pages, and for this article we checked every remote ad's location list on the employer's own site.

In short

  • About one AI job in six on Tokn is fully remote. Hybrid is more common, at about 28%.
  • ElevenLabs, Cohere, Synthesia and n8n hold about half of all remote AI roles. OpenAI has none; Anthropic and Mistral AI almost none.
  • Only about 5 remote roles are open "anywhere". About 3 in 10 are tied to a single country, most often the UK.
  • Remote roles skew senior: about three in four with a stated level are senior or lead.

How many remote AI jobs are there in Europe?

About one AI job in six is fully remote. On Tokn, that is about 130 roles, against about 215 hybrid (28%) and 120 on-site, while four in ten ads don't state a policy. Our October 2026 AI job market report puts these figures in the wider market context.

For context, 8.8% of EU workers usually worked from home in 2025, according to Eurostat. The Indeed Hiring Lab remote tracker found remote or hybrid work mentioned in about 45% of UK and German software development postings in late August 2026. Tokn's remote and hybrid shares add up to a similar 45%, but the methods differ, so treat it as an echo, not a match.

Which AI companies hire remotely in Europe?

A small group of remote-first employers does most of it. About 30 of the 79 companies with AI roles on Tokn have at least one fully remote role, and four of them hold about half of all remote roles. For the overall ranking, see the AI companies hiring the most in Europe.

Remote-first employers

At least half of these companies' AI roles on Tokn were fully remote in October.

CompanyRemote / open rolesWhere you can work, per their ads
ElevenLabs29 of 30Europe or the US East Coast, on CET or ET hours
Cohere18 of 25Listed European and North American cities
Synthesia12 of 24UK, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland; elsewhere in Europe after checks
n8n9 of 9About 25 European countries
ClickHouse5 of 9Staff in over 25 countries
Databricks5 of 10One country per ad (UK, Netherlands, Sweden)
Spotify4 of 8EMEA, where Spotify has a work location
Cursor4 of 5London or Germany, customer-facing roles
GitLab4 of 4All-remote, with pay set per country
Dataiku3 of 4France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, UK
Hugging Face3 of 3"EMEA Remote"
Qonto3 of 3France, Germany, Spain, Italy
Pigment2 of 4France or UK
Alan2 of 3France, Belgium, Spain

These 14 companies hold about four in five of the remote AI roles on Tokn. Supabase and Poolside also advertised only remote roles in October, two each.

Companies with a few remote roles

Some office-first companies still open the odd remote role. Mistral AI had 4 remote roles out of 84, team lead and infrastructure positions open across a list of European cities; otherwise it is an office-first employer, as we explain in what it's like to work at Mistral AI. Shift Technology advertised remote roles across France, and Pennylane, Inato, Lemlist and Owkin had one each.

Big AI employers that rarely or never hire remotely

CompanyAI rolesFully remoteHow they hire

Anthropic440 staff rolesAt least 25% of time in an office
Lovable440On-site
Wayve400Hybrid where stated
Legora260On-site

Helsing100On-site

Anthropic's only remote-friendly listings were a fixed-length fellowship for people with work authorization in the US, UK or Canada, not staff jobs. In Stockholm, almost every AI job is on-site, because Lovable and Legora hire in the office.

What does "remote" mean in AI job ads?

Almost never "anywhere". Of the roughly 130 remote AI roles open to people in Europe, only 5 could be done from anywhere. The rest name countries, and you must live in one of them with the right to work there.

Whatever a job card says, read the full location list on the original ad before you apply.

Country lists and the right to work

Most remote ads require you to already have the right to work in a listed country. n8n's ads said: "We can sponsor visas to Germany; for any other country, you need to have existing right to work." Alan's asked candidates to be "legally eligible to work in France, Belgium, or Spain".

The UK alone accounts for 18 of the 39 single-country roles. UK employers must check a job applicant's right to work before hiring, so an EU citizen without UK status generally cannot take a UK-only remote role.

Time zones and travel

Remote rarely means "any hours" or "never in person". Time-zone requirements mostly mean overlap with Central European or UK time: Spotify's generative audio research ad set "core working hours" of "CET 3pm-6pm / EST 9am-12pm", and one Cohere ad accepted applicants "anywhere between UTC−06:00 and UTC+01:00".

More than half of the remote ads we read mention travel, offsites or meetups. Poolside's team met in Paris "each month for 3 days", and a Databricks forward deployed engineer ad expected customer travel "once every 4-8 weeks".

Employee, contractor or employer of record

About nine in ten remote AI roles on Tokn are ordinary employment. The exceptions were fellowships (Scale AI's was an independent contractor engagement), a few internships and two freelance roles.

When a company has no entity in your country, it can hire you through an employer of record (EOR), a company that becomes your legal employer and runs payroll, taxes and benefits. Synthesia's ads said hiring was "through our entities or EOR (OysterHR)", with "no contractors possible".

Social security and tax explain why employers restrict countries. In general:

  • Social security. Under EU rules, which country covers you depends on where you work and live, and you can't choose (Your Europe). Fully remote work from home generally falls under your home country's system, hence the local entity or EOR.
  • Hybrid cross-border work. A cross-border telework framework agreement lets you stay under the employer country's system if you telework from your country of residence less than 50% of the time and both countries signed. It is for hybrid setups, not fully remote ones, and the UK has said it will not sign.
  • Tax. There are no EU-wide rules. You are usually tax-resident where you spend more than six months a year, and double tax agreements settle dual residence (Your Europe).

This is general information, not legal or tax advice: check your situation with the employer and the authorities involved.

Which AI roles are remote, and at what level?

Remote depends on the employer far more than on the role. Across role families (engineering, research, customer-facing, product, marketing, internships), the fully remote share sits between about 15% and 20%. Only engineering management is clearly lower, at about one in ten.

LLM and GenAI, research and infrastructure roles are slightly more often remote, but one employer can tilt a category: ElevenLabs alone has 8 of the remote LLM and GenAI roles. See remote machine learning jobs, or read what an LLM engineer does.

Remote roles advertised in October included:

  • Forward Deployed Engineer, EMEA (Cursor, n8n)
  • Research Engineer, Inference (ElevenLabs)
  • Open-Source Machine Learning Engineer, EMEA Remote (Hugging Face)
  • Staff Machine Learning Engineer for AI Engines (Qonto)

Seniority matters more than role. Fewer than one junior AI role in ten on Tokn is fully remote (5 of 73), against nearly one senior role in five. Three in four remote roles with a stated level are senior or lead, and remote roles rarely go to people with under three years' experience. Remote machine learning jobs in Europe are mostly a second or third move.

Do remote AI jobs pay less?

Tokn's data can't tell: only 7 remote ads publish a euro salary, five of them from n8n. What the ads do show is that remote pay is usually set per country.

  • n8n published €127.5k–€201.6k for a Staff Core Platform Engineer.
  • Pigment published €80k–€140k for a Senior GenAI Engineer in France, and £80k–£150k in the UK.
  • GitLab gave a range per country, such as 272k–408k PLN for a Senior Backend Engineer in Poland.

The same remote role can pay differently depending on where you live: our guide to what AI roles pay in Europe shows per-country ranges.

How to land a remote AI job in Europe

  1. Target remote-first employers. Four companies hold about half of the remote roles: watch their openings.
  2. Read the location list first. Check that your country is on it and that you have the right to work there. Visa sponsorship for remote roles is rare.
  3. Match the time zone. Say where you are based and which Central European or UK hours you cover.
  4. Show you work well remotely. GitLab's ads asked for "strong written communication in an all-remote, asynchronous environment".
  5. Consider customer-facing roles. Forward deployed and solutions roles make up about 20 remote roles, usually within a territory, with travel.
  6. If you are junior, start hybrid. It builds the experience remote employers ask for.
