An AI product manager decides what an AI product should do and how good it has to be before it ships. Most of the job is ordinary product management. What gets added is measuring quality with evals and treating model, cost and latency choices as product decisions, at least for PMs who own a model or an agent's output.

On Tokn, as of 14 October 2026, we counted 40 product manager openings at 19 AI companies in Europe. None was junior, and only 7 of the 40 titles contained "AI". This guide is part of our overview of careers in AI.

In short

  • AI PM jobs split by what you own: the model or platform (10 of 40 postings), an AI-powered product (14), a classic PM area such as growth or billing at an AI company (12), or customer deployments (4).
  • Only 4 of 40 postings named evals, all for PMs who own a model or agent's output. Classic PM skills dominate.
  • These are experienced hires: no junior roles, and a median minimum of 5 years where a figure was given.
  • Search "Product Manager, Inference" or "Product Manager, Agents", not "AI Product Manager". Most jobs are in Paris, London and Stockholm.

What is an AI product manager?

An AI product manager is a PM whose product behaves the way it does because of a model. You decide what it should do, what "good" means, and when it is safe to ship. That differs from a PM who simply uses AI tools, a split Product School's guide also draws. The line is blurring: in a December 2024 essay, Marty Cagan of SVPG wrote that "virtually all product managers will need to be AI product managers".

One practical point: the title rarely says "AI". Only 7 of the 40 PM titles on Tokn contained the word, and the literal title "AI Product Manager" appeared once, at Celonis. At AI-native companies the title is "Product Manager" plus an area: Inference, Agents, Growth.

The four kinds of AI product manager jobs

The useful split is by what the PM owns, not by how much AI they use. We sorted the 40 postings by hand, so treat the counts as approximate.

Kind of AI PMWhat you ownExamples advertised in OctoberPostings (of 40)
Model and platform PMInference, APIs, agent harness, AI platformLead PM Inference (Mistral AI), PM Agent Harness & Modelling (Cohere), PM AI Inference (Scaleway)10

Forward-deployed PMCustomer deployments, turned into productForward Deployed PM Enterprise (Scale AI), Staff PM AI FDE (Snowflake)4

Model and platform PMs are the most technical group. Mistral AI's Lead PM Inference posting asked for "fluency in the economics of the business: gross margin, unit economics, and the tradeoffs behind token pricing and GPU capacity".

PMs of AI-powered products own what end users see. One Legora posting talked of using "AI as a core building block, shaping how legal professionals work with and trust AI in their day-to-day."

Classic PMs at AI companies do growth, billing and enterprise work. Synthesia's Growth PM posting put it well: "AI has collapsed the cost of building which means the hard part is no longer making things, it's making sure people actually adopt them." We think this is the most realistic door for an experienced PM with no ML background.

Forward-deployed PMs work with customers and decide, in Scale AI's words, "which bespoke solutions should move from custom to core product". It is the product-side cousin of the forward deployed engineer.

What an AI product manager does day to day

For PMs who own a model's or agent's output, four things join normal PM work: defining quality, cost trade-offs, working with researchers and designing for failure.

Defining "good" and owning evals

An eval is a repeatable test of how well the model does your product's task. Lovable's Agents PM had to "Own the quality bar for agent outputs - drive eval infrastructure, monitor regressions, and ensure the agent improves with every release".

The labs' own guides are the best how-to. Anthropic's guide to success criteria and evaluations asks for criteria that are specific, measurable, achievable and relevant, from task fidelity and tone to latency and price. OpenAI's evaluation best practices recommend "eval-driven development" and warn against "vibe-based" evals. In his April 2025 interview with Lenny Rachitsky, OpenAI's CPO Kevin Weil argued that writing evals is becoming a core PM skill.

Keep it in proportion: only 4 of the 40 postings named evals (Cohere, Lovable, Nabla and Photoroom), all for PMs who own a model or agent's output.

Model, cost and latency trade-offs

Every model call costs money and time, so speed, quality and cost become product choices. Photoroom's AI platform PM had to understand "cost per call", and Elastic's vectors PM the "trade-offs between recall and latency". This too was explicit in 4 of 40 postings, all model-facing.

Working with researchers

Ten of the 40 postings mentioned working with research, ML or modelling teams. Photoroom wanted a PM to "convert new model capabilities into shipped features", and Wayve one who can "debate trade-offs credibly with senior researchers and engineers".

Designing for failure and trust

A model will sometimes be wrong. Nabla's dictation PM had to cover "the edge cases and failure paths that determine whether clinicians trust it". Google's People + AI Guidebook is a good primer: in its example, a recommender that is useful 60% of the time can be a success or a failure, depending on what users expect.

AI PM vs product manager: what actually changes

The core job is the same: understand customers, choose what to build, ship it and grow it. What changes is how you specify and judge a product whose output is probabilistic.

AI product manager skills: what postings ask for

Classic PM skills dominate; evals and cost come last. We scanned the stored text of the 40 postings; 5 had no stored requirements, so these counts are minimums.

A newer ask is using AI in your own work. Three Photoroom postings said it outright: "You use Claude or equivalent every day". Whether you need to code is a separate question, covered in our look at how technical AI jobs really are.

How senior are AI PM roles?

Senior. Of the 40 postings, 0 were junior, 10 mid-level, 10 senior, 10 lead (staff, principal or director) and 10 didn't say. Where a minimum was stated (18 postings), the median was 5 years. For a US contrast, Axial Search reports a median of 7 years in US AI product postings.

AI product manager jobs in Europe: who is hiring

On Tokn on 14 October, Mistral AI had the most PM openings (6), followed by Lovable and Photoroom (4 each), then Legora, n8n and Synthesia (3 each). We list only AI-related roles at Databricks, Datadog, Elastic and Snowflake, so their PM hiring is wider than Tokn shows. By city, AI product jobs in Paris led with 15, then London (10) and Stockholm (6); a handful were fully remote.

The US labs hire their PMs elsewhere, for now. On 14 October, Anthropic, OpenAI, Harvey and Perplexity listed 48 PM openings worldwide on their career boards, none in Europe. Mistral AI was the European lab hiring PMs: its own board listed 7 PM postings, all in Paris, with London as an option on 5. More in what it's like to work at Mistral AI.

Few postings show pay. Three European examples: Dust's founding PM in Paris (€80k–€120k plus equity and bonus), n8n's senior PMs in Berlin or remote Europe (€89.7k–€152.3k plus equity), and Ekimetrics' product owner in Paris (€42k–€50k). Robert Half's 2027 Salary Guide gives a £102,750 median for AI product managers in London. Our AI salaries in Europe guide has the wider picture.

How to become an AI product manager

Most people get there by being a PM first, then picking a door.

  1. Get product experience first. The median minimum in postings was 5 years.
  2. Ship an AI feature where you are, and write its evals. The Anthropic and OpenAI guides above are enough to start.
  3. Use AI tools daily in your own PM work, and be able to show how.
  4. Pick your door. A classic PM area at an AI company is the most open. Domain expertise is another (law at Legora, healthcare at Nabla). Engineers and solutions people can aim for platform PM roles.
  5. Early in your career? Look at graduate PM programmes and internships at data and AI platform companies. Databricks advertised a new-grad PM role and PM internships in Amsterdam and Berlin in October, and Datadog a PM internship in Paris.
  6. Prepare for interviews. Our ML and AI interview questions cover the technical ground.

FAQ

Do AI product managers need to code?

Mostly no, but you need to be credible with engineers. Model and platform PM roles, and some agent roles, prefer people who have programmed.

Can you become an AI product manager with no experience?

Rarely. On 14 October 2026 Tokn had no junior PM roles, and the median minimum was 5 years. Graduate PM programmes and PM internships at data and AI platform companies are the realistic entry points.

How much does an AI product manager earn in Europe?

Few postings show pay. Dust advertised €80k–€120k plus equity for a founding PM in Paris, and n8n €89.7k–€152.3k plus equity for senior PMs. Robert Half's 2027 guide gives a £102,750 median in London.

Is an AI product manager certificate worth it?

No PM posting on Tokn asked for one, and Axial Search found no credential dominating US postings. We think shipping an AI feature and writing evals for it counts for more.
