OpenAI careers in Europe are mostly in London, then Dublin and Munich. As of 14 October 2026, we track 50 open AI and technical roles at OpenAI on Tokn. Nearly two in three are customer-facing engineering roles that put ChatGPT, the API and Codex to work at companies; research is 5 roles.

That puts OpenAI joint second with Anthropic in our ranking of the AI companies hiring the most in Europe, behind Mistral AI (86). As at Mistral, the biggest hiring block works with customers.

In short

  • 50 OpenAI roles on Tokn as of 14 October 2026, 23 of them posted in the last 30 days.
  • 31 of 50 (62%) are customer-facing: applied AI, forward deployed and support engineers. 11 are tied to Codex. Research is 5.
  • London has 26 (9 of them San Francisco postings open to London), Dublin and Munich 8 each, Paris 5.
  • Hybrid, 3 office days a week where stated. No fully remote role.
  • Pay ranges appear on three London postings only. Some Paris, Munich and Madrid roles require French, German or Spanish.

OpenAI in 30 seconds

OpenAI is the San Francisco company behind ChatGPT and Codex. Europe is a small share of its hiring.

What OpenAI is hiring for in Europe

Mostly engineers who deploy OpenAI's models at customers. The table sorts the 50 roles on Tokn by title.

Tokn's OpenAI page lists its AI and technical roles, not its whole board. On 14 October, OpenAI's board had 76 European postings (65 based in Europe, plus 11 US postings that also list London). Most of the 26 we don't list are sales and partnerships (14), IT (3), HR and legal roles.

Applied AI engineers and architects

The largest family: 19 roles in London, Munich, Paris, Madrid and Dublin. Architects own the technical side of large accounts: "You will act as the 'CTO of your book of business'", a Large Enterprise posting said.

Applied AI Engineers are more hands-on. Codex postings wanted "substantial personal contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging, integrations, or production engineering", not only enablement work. Specialised versions cover startups, quant trading firms, governments and education.

LLM roles in London, at OpenAI and elsewhere:

Forward deployed engineers

Six roles in London, Paris, Munich, Zurich and Madrid, most posted in early October. FDEs "lead complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside our most strategic customers". Postings asked for 5+ years of engineering or deployment experience including customer-facing work, and "Travel up to 50% is required." See what a forward deployed engineer does.

Codex: one role in five

11 of the 50 roles are tied to Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Eight help customers adopt it, in London, Paris, Munich and Madrid; three build it. Applicants were expected to be "an active user of AI coding tools" with "a strong point of view" on them. It helps to know how Codex compares with Claude Code and Cursor.

Support engineering in Dublin

Most support roles are in Dublin. One posting opened with "We are building the very first post-AGI support team" and asked for 8+ years in technical roles. Expect some weekend and holiday on-call.

Engineering and research

Three software roles are London-based, including ChatGPT Infrastructure: "Our London-based team builds the backend systems that help ChatGPT scale reliably." Six more are San Francisco postings that also list London.

Research is a small share: a training researcher and an integrity scientist in London, plus three San Francisco safety-research postings open to London. OpenAI plans to make London "its largest research hub outside the US", tech.eu reported in February 2026.

Where the jobs are: London, Dublin, Munich, Paris and beyond

London leads, then Dublin and Munich. Unlike Mistral, OpenAI posts one city per posting.

OpenAI London jobs

OpenAI announced its first office outside the US in London in June 2023. Of the 26 London roles on Tokn, 17 are London-based and 9 are San Francisco postings open to London. OpenAI has signed a lease at King's Cross for up to 544 staff from 2027, Investment Monitor reported in April 2026. See all AI jobs in London.

OpenAI Dublin jobs

Dublin has been OpenAI's EU base since 2023. On 12 October 2026, OpenAI announced 200 more Irish roles and an Applied AI Lab, bringing its commitment to at least 450 new roles, according to IDA Ireland. That counts new jobs, not headcount: it employs over 120 people in Ireland. The lab will hire forward deployed, solutions and privacy engineers. OpenAI already accounts for 8 of the 15 AI jobs in Dublin on Tokn.

Munich, Paris, Madrid, Zurich and Stockholm

Office policy

OpenAI is office-first, like Mistral. Its postings say: "We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees." No role on Tokn is fully remote. We found no visa sponsorship statement on European postings, so ask the recruiter.

Seniority and experience

OpenAI hires experienced people in Europe. Where a minimum is stated (22 of 50 roles), examples:

  • 4+ years: Software Engineer, ChatGPT Infrastructure; safety researchers (research engineering).
  • 5+ years: Forward Deployed Engineer; Cloud Infrastructure.
  • 8+ years: AI Support Engineer; Manager, Applied AI Engineering (Codex).
  • 10+ years: Manager, Applied AI Architects, plus 4+ years managing people.

Applied AI postings state no year count but want "a demonstrated track record" of enterprise delivery. There are no internships in Europe, and the Residency is San Francisco only.

What OpenAI's job postings ask for

Customer work, evals and agents, more than a list of tools. In the full text of the 50 postings:

  • Customers: 37 mention customers or clients, 13 workshops, 7 pre-sales.
  • LLM work: 31 mention evals, 28 agents, 7 RAG or retrieval.
  • Code: 27 mention Python, 19 TypeScript or JavaScript.
  • Codex: 22 mention it.
  • Degrees: only 2 mention a PhD. OpenAI's interview guide says "We are not credential-driven".
  • Local language: 7 roles require French, German or Spanish alongside English. London roles ask for English only, except a Spanish-speaking FDE role. Mistral's AI postings rarely ask for anything but English.

The OpenAI hiring process, step by step

OpenAI publishes an official interview guide. Unlike Mistral, it doesn't list steps on its European postings.

  1. Application review: typically one week before the recruiting team emails you back.
  2. Introductory calls with the recruiter or hiring manager.
  3. Skills assessment: pair coding, take-home projects or technical tests, by team. You hear back within a week.
  4. Final interviews: "Typically, our candidates go through 4–6 hours of final interviews with 4–6 people over 1–2 days." Virtual by default; onsite is an option only in San Francisco.
  5. Decision within a week of the finals. References may be requested.

On AI tools, "Expectations for AI and other tools vary by interview": some formats allow them, others don't. To practise, use our ML and AI interview questions.

OpenAI salary and benefits in Europe

OpenAI publishes ranges on three London postings and none on its other European postings.

London posting (advertised in October)Base salary
Researcher, Training£170k–£445k + equity
Software Engineer, ChatGPT Infrastructure£194k–£280k + equity
Software Engineer, Model Deployment, ChatGPT Engineering£194k–£280k

The dollar ranges on San Francisco postings open to London are US pay, not London salaries.

According to its UK postings, benefits include fully paid private medical insurance, a 4% employer pension contribution and unlimited time off. Irish postings mention 6% or 8% pension matching. Benefits vary by country. For context by role, see what AI roles pay in Europe.

How to stand out

Based on the postings, we'd focus on:

  1. Show production code with LLMs. Applied roles want personal contributions in code, not only enablement.
  2. Know evals. 31 of 50 postings mention them.
  3. Use Codex or another AI coding tool daily, and have a view on it.
  4. Bring customer-facing experience for FDE and applied roles: consulting, solutions or sales engineering.
  5. Check the language line on Paris, Munich and Madrid roles.
  6. Read the Charter and research blog, as OpenAI's interview guide recommends.
